Copyright Services for Songwriters, Authors and Composers.
Songrite is a leading global copyright registration service, used by both up and coming and professional songwriters who wish to claim and declare rightful ownership of their music based works. We register and secure the copyrights of new songs, music and lyrics.
We specialise in registering the copyrights of musical based works such as songs, music, jingles and lyrics. All songwriters, composers and authors who submit their work for copyright registration are issued with an official Songrite Copyright Certificate and an Authors Safe Keeping Contract which guarantees the safe keeping of all songs and lyrics that are submitted to Songrite for copyright registration.
What is Copyright?:
Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United Kingdom to the authors of “original works of authorship" (songs, music and lyrics etc.) that are fixed in a tangible form such as a CD, tape or a manuscript, the list also includes literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works.
Under present UK copyright law, all original songs, music and lyrics that are fixed in a tangible form such as, recorded on a CD, written down on paper or other medium are automatically copyrighted, that is the author, songwriter, or composer who created the work automatically owns the copyrights to that work. Copyright registration is not a requirement, within the United Kingdom however, should a dispute over the copyright ownership of a piece of music, a song or set of lyrics arise, then the onus is on you to provide the necessary proof of ownership.
Who Owns the Copyright?:
Proof of copyright ownership is required in a court of law when determining who actually owns the copyrights to the work being contested. This is when copyright registration becomes an essential provision, acting almost like an insurance policy that protects the rights and privileges that copyright law grants to the creator.
DIY Copyright Protection:
The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself in a sealed envelope or package is often referred to as a “poor man’s copyright.” There is no provision in the text of copyright law that recognises this as a reliable alternative to registration. Therefore the process of placing reliance on the “poor man’s copyright” is not a viable substitute for registration. Use of this method will probably not hold up in a court as it is simple for individuals to pre-send unsealed envelopes which can then be used later by placing the actual "original work" inside and then sealed.
